Dolly's work is playfully polemic, in medium and context. During art school, Dolly interrogated the language system and was drawn to anagrams in his textual based practice, specifically deconstructing words and phrases utilised during the pandemic, whilst studying his Master's at Camberwell College of Arts, 2022. Dolly wanted to exchange the fear and oppression on the audience's face to a wry, blissful smile. Creating humour out of controlling text, powerful and aggressive advertising, like slogans during the years of the pandemic, considering the restrictions society had placed upon them.
Dolly delved and investigated the history of anagrams somewhat amazed, astonished as to the language system and such coded messages. Mystically utilised for the elite, presented to viewers in all realms of history in publishing, television, literature and art through the ages. Hidden signs and semiotics are in plain sight, yet maybe, interpreted with indifference to the individual viewer in the everyday by those that know and those that do not know the coded system. Dolly intends to deconstruct the language system word by word, letter by letter, incorporating inflatable text, causing a juxtaposition, as these objects are predominantly associated with celebrations. Within this collection, Dolly is celebrating the deletion of the original text at the same time deconstructing the notion that a canvas is just for paints. Dolly's contemporary choice of ready-made objects bring these historic, utilisation of anagrams into the modern world. Furthermore, Dolly’s intention was for the audience to interact with the works longer than thirty seconds, in-line with the concept that is regarded as the average time a viewer looks at an artwork in a museum or gallery environment.
In late 2022, Dolly had to pause his artistic endeavours, compartmentalise his creativity due to his mother being struck by a severe neurological disorder. Choosing discipline over regret, Dolly's life became irrelevant; his mothers future care was fundamental. This was a richly rewarding spiritual time with much trauma, misery and unpredictabilities caused by this horrid disease of the mind. Journaling daily over the next two years to release personal misery and pain, hoping that maybe in the future, the journal notes and observations of this life limiting, characteristic changes, debilitating illness, may help others.
Dolly now feels it is his time for new beginnings, returning to his Anagram Series 2022. Over this period, Dolly created numerous anagrams and the hidden meaning behind the public word or phrase. For example, ‘Dementia Care’ can be decoded via an anagram as ‘Amerce Detain.’ ‘Amerce’ is an old English legal term for punishment, ‘Punish and Detain.’ The Dementia Care homes Dolly visited, entering through three secure doors resembled a segregation unit within a secure prison.
Decoding from the original context of the word or phrase can relate in some way to the original textual meaning, dark and sinister... or playful. As with the anagram artwork above, ‘Rough Flu’ came from the word 'Furlough,' a term utilised throughout the pandemic.
